Cancer Facts Back To Top
The following statistics are taken from the National Cancer Register of Ireland 2009.

The statistics for male and female cancers are alarming.

Between 1994 and 2001, an average of 20,523 cancer cases was registered each year. Between 1994 and 2007, an average of 26,285 cancer cases was registered each year, so cancer rates are increasing.

In the period 2005-2007, an annual average of 27,023 new cancers was registered with 27,930 cancers registered in 2007. Of these, females accounted for 14,561 of the cancer cases and males accounted for 13,369 cases.

In the 2005-2007 period, breast cancer was, apart from non-melanoma skin cancer the most common diagnosis in women, making up 30% of all invasive cancers. The most common cancer in men was prostate cancer (29% of cases). The number of new cases of invasive cancer increased from 17,242 in 1994 to 23,278 in 2007, an annual increase of 2.5% in woman and 2.8% in men.
Overall cancer mortality in Ireland in 2003 was close to the European average. However, mortality for woman was the fourth highest in Europe, lower only than Hungary, The Czech Republic and Scotland, while that for men was the 21st highest of the 31 countries shown and below the European average. In 2005, there were 3,794 female cancer deaths and there were 4,067 male deaths.
